Sibling DNA Test

What is the Purpose Of A Sibling DNA Test?

The sibling DNA test is designed to establish two facts about the familial relationship between two persons.

  • First, a DNA sibling test will determine if the two individuals are actually related naturally.
  • Second, the sibling DNA test will determine if the two individuals share the same two parents, or simply one of the two.

Here are some examples of situations where this type of paternity testing may be desirable.

In some cases, a sibling DNA test may be desired as a means of answering any long time family folklore about the parentage of one or both of the children.

Brothers and sisters who do not seem to share much in the way of physical characteristics or temperament may feel somewhat curious about just how closely they are related. The sibling DNA test will help to answer any lingering questions about the connection between the two, and to what degree that connection exists.

DNA Test Can Satisfy Curiosity, Solve Problems

At other times, the sibling DNA test may be used to do more than simply satisfy curiosity. In situations where there is some legal claim to the estate of a purported father, siblings may choose to undergo the testing. This is in order to establish that all of the children are in fact the natural issue of the father, and therefore are entitled to either financial support from the natural father, or a share of the father's estate.

The DNA sibling test is an ideal way to settle outstanding claims of paternity by comparing the DNA of an individual who is known to be a child of the deceased with that of the individual who claims to have been sired by the same father.

While it is possible to establish the relationship between two suspected siblings by obtaining only samples from the two individuals, the results are enhanced by obtaining a sample from the suspected parent as well.

While this is not always possible, it should be understood that the presence of additional DNA material makes it much easier to establish the degree of familial connection between the siblings.

Different types of sibling DNA test procedures

There are a few different types of sibling DNA test procedures. One will establish that the two individuals are indeed siblings. A half-sibling test can be used to determine if the siblings share one or two parents. A twin sibling DNA test can even help determine if the twins are fraternal or identical genetically.

Generally, the sibling DNA test is conducted under the same stringent security that is afforded any type of DNA Paternity test, with the results usually available within a week.
